Evaluation 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine represents women throughout the whole magazine have no indication of anything to do with men. As my target audience is people from the age 13-17 I aimed my questionnaire to be asked to these kind of ages. From doing my question I was able to find out what kind of genre everyone liked the most. My results showed me that most teenage girls tended to prefer the pop institution over any other type of genre. So from having this result I was able to put together and social group that would go well with my audience. This is why I chose to do a group of girls that represent the typical status for girls. The colours I have used throughout my magazine give a sense of indication on who it is presenting as the colours tend to be used my young females as they are bright and consist of colours such as pink, etc.

Clothing:
From looking at the front cover of the magazine 'We Love Pop' you can see that the outfits that the group are wearing go with the colours scheme of the whole magazine, they aren't just put in colours that wouldn't look right. However in my magazine the girls are presented to be wearing black and white with the writing around them in colour. I think that having the girls in black and white does in fact show what most teenage girls wear on a daily basis, they all tend to wear dull colours.

Shot Type/Angle:
Yet again my magazine shows a completely different photo to what the 'We Love Pop' shows. The 'We Love Pop' magazine presents the girls all looking differently in a mid shot but it goes with the slogan at the bottom. However my magazine presents the girls as all looking the same as the slogan was "Success is all about believing" as I wanted to present them as a group who want to do well and want people to see that. I also used a mid shot to present the girls but it was more a longer mid shot so you could see them all individually.

First draft

These are the photos I took to include in my magazine but I have decided that they don't go with the story I have decided to write about. I am taking new photos to use and that I feel more comfortable using. My draft for my front cover and contents page use the photos I wanted to use, so when I retake them I will change the photos to the new ones, making it look how I want it to.

Where I am so far

I have just taken my photos for my front cover, contents and double page spread and I am currently editing them. I have also made the outline of each page and started playing around with different colours.

Plumtree

Natalie, well done for planning out your front cover and interior pages. Remember, you don't have to stick rigidly to this design. Use all your research to help you if you need to adapt your layouts and organisation of your ideas.

I decided to research and analysis this magazine because I felt like it was the best one to look at for the genre I have picked to do and for the audience I want to show my magazine to.

Natalie, there is some good research and reflective thoughts on your prelim task on your blog. Look at how little blank space there is in the music magazine compared to your product. Think about this when it comes to your own music magazine and your use of space.

Evaluation from the Preliminary Task

Evaluation of Preliminary Task;

Did you plan your magazine? If not, what have you learnt about the importance of research and planning?
I knew what the magazine had to be about but I wouldn’t say I planned out what I was going to add onto it. From not planning out what I was going to add has taught me that it is important if you want to make the magazine the best you can. If I had planned I wouldn’t have sat around thinking about what to write onto it to make it appropriate to the task.

What technology did you use to complete the task and how did you use it?
I used a camera to take pictures for the front cover of my magazine, I also took some extra ones that I could possibly put into the contents page. I used the software Photo Plus X8 to edit my photos, I used this to crop and get rid of the background of my photos. I also used Page Plus to make my magazine, this allowed me to play around with different tools to make the magazine look good.

Did you encounter any difficulties? If so, what were they and how did you overcome them?
I found some parts of the task hard but not all of it. It took me a while to get use to using the software as at first I didn’t really understand what I was doing but as soon as I looked at the hand out book I then got the hang of how to use the software and how to use it correctly.

How successful was your magazine? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently?
I think that my magazine’s final page was good but if I had to redo it I would make sure I put a lot more detail onto and fill the page up more as there is a lot of space around the page that I haven’t used. I think my photo turned out good and it fit perfectly on the front page but I could improve on the detail around it.

What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing the rest of your foundation coursework, do you think?

From this task I have learnt that I need to plan ahead with what I am going to add onto my magazine front cover so I’m not just putting anything onto it at the end of the day. I will make my magazine look interesting and not boring with just a couple bits of writing on it.
